I consider it an established fact that the original Die Hard is indeed a Christmas movie. We are not going to debate that here, that matter is settled. I would like to talk about another action/comedy from the same era, Lethal Weapon 1.
Now, say what you will about the sequels. I happen to like them, even the one with Chris Rock in it. They certainly have a level of cheeseballness that doesn’t appeal to some people, I get it. The original Lethal Weapon, however, is a pretty solid movie, that deals with some genuinely serious issues. Grief, loss, guilt, depression, suicidal thoughts. It also has plenty of laughs, and some pretty good, if completely unrealistic, action.
So, is it a Christmas movie? I submit that yes, it is. The entirety of the movie takes place in the Christmas season, and explicitly so. One of the earliest scenes in the movie takes place in a Christmas tree lot, and the final scene takes place on Christmas night. Christmas is featured throughout this tail of chasing down murderous ex-military heroin dealers.
If you haven’t seen Lethal Weapon 1, or haven’t seen it in a long time, put it in your cue, right after Die Hard. Tis the season, after-all.
What say Oppo?

I t’ s been a minute since I’ve seen it, I’ll have to find means to watch soon and get back to you.
Also the scene i n 4 in the dentist office with the nitr ous is gold. As is the running joke that Rock’s character is gay for Murtaugh.

I had completely forgotten that it took place around Christmas until you mentioned the Christmas Tree lot. If only “Escape From New York” took place in December.

There’s really no reason to include Christmas elements in a movie AT ALL, unless you specifically intend for it to be a Christmas movie, or are just using a Christmas scene to help convey the passage of time.
Lethal Weapon is absolutely a Christmas movie.

I’m not sure. I posited the question if Gremlins was a Christmas movie and was met with denials.

I haven't seen the TV show, so I can't say.

This is indeed a Christmas movie. It even deals with the darker side of the season, when people don’t feel they have much to celebrate.
I’m one of those who only really liked the first one, but boy was it good.

Please do.

Agreed. The Christmas stuff isn't just scenery, it plays into the emotional story as well.

4 could have had more Jet Li, but is otherwise a pretty good movie. Don’t forget Murtaugh always misremembering his name.

I feel like it totally is.

“Low Carb Santa”
For some reason that just makes me laugh.

Yep, it gets pretty dark there. We just rewatched it recently, and my wife said, “It’s a shame Mel Gibson is such a mess of a human being, because he’s a REALLY good actor.”
The first one is definitely the best. It’s a very good movie. The sequels are more in the guilty pleasure department.

Mel is one of the best actors of all time. He’s also a weird, terrible person. Most great artists are. You either separate the art from the artist, or you don’t.

Totally a Christmas movie.
Darlene Love played the mom. She is also the actual lead singer on the Christmas song Baby Please Come Home. Phil Spector screwed her and her band out of credit.

It’s is. It all goes back to a dad feeling guilty about not being their for his son and over compensating with material gifts.

I didn't know that!

I'll have to watch that one again.
